Types of Debt Bailiffs Can Collect Against
Bailiffs can only act against you for particular types of debt. These are listed in the Bailiff advice guide and on this page under the title 'Debt Types'.
If you have one or more of these types of debt we can help you but a Bailiff may already be in the process of contacting you if you are behind with payments. If you have been contacted by a bailiff already it is not too late but it is important that you try to speak to us as soon as you can.
Council Tax Arrears
One of the main causes for concern among those that call us is Council Tax Areas. Unpaid council tax and business rates are types of debts that a bailiff can enforce to collect against you.
We work regularly with councils in the United Kingdom to find ways to stop bailiff action and create affordable repayment plans with your council whilst continuing to be able to pay council tax in the future.
Our advisers are professional and experienced and are happy to help. Speak to us today if you are worried about council tax arrears. 01736 888 254.
A Bailiff has already visited me. Is it too late?
Bailiff action is not a great way to pay off your debts. Bailiff fees, auctioneer charges and other expenses accrued as a result of bailiff action can often leave you in more debt than when you started.
If you have received a letter from a bailiff, had a visit or indeed had your belongings removed from you home contact us immediately. Time is of the essence and the sooner you act the more likely it is we will be able to help you.
Dealing With Debt
Bailiffs are instructed to collect debts. Debts, if properly managed with effective communication between the debtor and creditor, can be paid off without the need for expensive and invasive bailiff intervention.
We can help you get rid of the bailiff but we also need to help you fix the debt problem at the same time. If we don't fix the debt problem bailiffs are likely simply to return.
We are here to help. Action On is a charity and we provide totally free advice to help and support people in the UK with debt and bailiff problems. Please call us today and speak to a professional adviser who can help you and understand your personal situation.
